PiP Anywhere for Mac

It stays.
Everything else moves.

A floating window that stays on top of full-screen apps and every desktop, even mid-swipe. Float a video, a whole browser, or any real app.

Drag the window. On a Mac, the real shortcuts work here too.
The problem

Browser PiP gives up. This one doesn't.

Switch to an app in full screen and Brave's or Chrome's picture-in-picture is gone. macOS won't layer an ordinary window over another app's full-screen Space. It's been that way since 2020.

01 · Video

Pop any video out of the tab.

One shortcut in Brave or Chrome and the video floats, up to 60 fps, hardware-encoded. Sound keeps playing from the tab. Scroll over it for volume, sideways to seek.

02 · Floating browser

A whole browser, on top.

Tabs, an address bar, logins that stick, downloads. Ads and trackers are blocked inside WebKit before a request is even made, YouTube ads are skipped, and unpacked web extensions load too.

03 · Live Apps · beta

Your real apps, live.

Float your actual Brave, chat app or terminal, fully usable. Point at the window and your real cursor is handed over: clicks, typing and drag-and-drop are genuine. Resize it and the app re-lays out, so text stays sharp.

The window

Put it anywhere. Or nowhere.

Everything here works in every mode, from any app, even full-screen ones. The window in the corner of your screen is listening: try it.

  • Slide to the edge. Only a thin, heavily blurred tab stays, so nobody can see what's on it.
  • Ghost mode. See-through, and clicks pass through to whatever's underneath.
  • Never steals focus. The app you're working in stays in front.
  • Hide it from screen sharing while you present.

How it works

Three sources. One window that won't leave.

🎬 Browser tabtabCapture → H.264 🌐 WebKittabs · ad rules · extensions 🪟 Real app windowon a hidden display Loopback WebSocket127.0.0.1 · pinned extension ScreenCaptureKitIOSurface → layer, no copies Floating panelnon-activating · all Spacesits own window-server space

Over full screen

A non-activating panel that joins every Space as a full-screen auxiliary, from a menu-bar app. That combination is what lets it sit over other apps' full-screen Spaces.

Still during swipes

The panel lives in its own window-server space, the same technique menu-bar tools use to stay "sticky", so it doesn't move while you swipe between desktops.

Live Apps' stage

A hidden virtual display is the app's stage: nothing covers it there, so it never stops rendering. Frames go straight to the panel, and your cursor is handed over while you point at it.

Questions

Good to know.

Why not just use the browser's picture-in-picture?

Because it disappears the moment you switch to an app in full screen. macOS doesn't layer an ordinary app's window over another app's full-screen Space; the bug has been open since 2020. PiP Anywhere owns its floating window, so it can stay.

Does it work with Netflix or Prime Video?

Not in Video or Live Apps mode: DRM video can't be captured. The floating browser plays what Safari can.

Why does macOS warn when I open it?

The prebuilt app isn't notarized by Apple. The first time, right-click it and choose Open, or run the one-line command above. You can also build it yourself from source.

What do Screen Recording and Accessibility do in Live Apps?

Screen Recording shows the real app's window live in the floating window (nothing is recorded or saved). Accessibility moves that window to a hidden display and hands it your cursor. Video and the floating browser need neither.

Does it use private macOS APIs?

A few, for staying still while you swipe desktops, the resize cursor and Live Apps' virtual display. They're loaded at runtime; if a future macOS removes one, that feature turns off and the rest keeps working.

Is it free?

Yes. Open source under the MIT licence, no accounts, no tracking.
